For lovers of live hip hop Leeds can sometimes feel like Manchester’s poor relation: I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to traverse the Pennines to see an act that’s missed our city of the list of tour dates (Loyle Carner and Kate Tempest, we love you, come back…). And it has to be said that the Manchester scene is on the rise in a big, big way: you can’t turn a corner without bumping into another jaw-droppingly good act – J.Chambers, Levelz, Free Wize Men, The Mouse Outfit, Children of Zeus and Cul de Sac.
This makes the Applebum at Leeds HiFi all the more exciting. Their soundcloud page gives a flavour of what to expect from the nights: a respite from auto-tune trap rappers and a return to the solid gold boom bap flavours. Playing it safe with the playlists they may be but sometimes you should give the people on the dancefloor what they want.
And the launch party is lucky enough to have some live hip hop that you really, really do not want to miss. Cul de Sac is the joint project of Layfullstop, Truce, Berry Blacc and Kid Katharsis – all producers/performers in their own right. The Stems EP dropped in May of this year, and I still can’t stop playing Know We Now. Check out the video, then kick yourself in the shins for missing the £4 first release tickets for Saturday night, then lick your wounds and get the £6 tickets that are still up for grabs.
See you there.
