People of Leeds we are lucky… This Friday the combined efforts of Elements and Bam Bam Bam are responsible for bringing one of the most exciting gigs we have seen in a while. This promises to be something special. Akua Naru is best known for her 2011 album The Journey Aflame which earned her a place in the heart of every head who loves to nod their head to a boom bap beat, and all those who listen out for intelligent lyricism. This was followed by the stunning rework of some of that material in the live sessions that resulted in the album Live and Aflame Sessions which captured the attention of aficionados of jazz and soul.
Her latest release, The Miner’s Canary, has been eagerly anticipated and it doesn’t disappoint and doesn’t confine itself to the boundaries of any genre. From the self-explanatory Boom Bap Back (with guest work from Dynasty and the incredible Sa-Roc), to the jazz track Mr Brownskin (featuring the equally innovative producer, singer and MC Georgia Anne Muldrow) via the sweet seductive soul of tracks like Seraphim, this is an album that unites all these styles. And you can have all of this, up close and personal in the HiFi, with a six piece live band to boot.
Oh and if that WASN’T enough there are three acts worth coming to see before she takes the stage. First up, Released signings Chris Dawkins and Wulls will be demonstrating why this label is one that you should be keeping an eye on. Singer songwriter Malaika has an an incredible soul/jazz voice that can soar effortlessly across an incredible range. Last but by no means least are Northaze whose recent release on Blah Records, Mellow Thrills shows why they are taking the Leeds hip hop scene by the scruff of the neck and shaking it up.
RHYME AND REASON MEMBERS WILL BE OFFERED TICKETS FOR THIS GIG AT THE EXCLUSIVE RATE OF £10 (non-member ticket price £14) – Register by Friday at 5pm for details of how to obtain the discount
